The timetable was slightly altered and the day began with the 2000m points races in each category. First up was Flynn McGurk to take silver in the 10-12 yr age cat. Eve McInerney followed suit with another silver in the 13-15 yr age cat.

Team coach and former European Champion Mike McInerney completed the Masters 5,000m points race in first position, gaining him the title of British Champion. To add to his success, he also broke the British record finishing in a respectable 8mins 59secs.

Mike was delighted with his achievement and said after the race: “Anything under 9 minutes is good, especially when you’re out in front on your own with no-one to draft!”

Mike’s success didn’t stop there. He broke the record in the Masters 1000m to become British champion and also won both the 500m and Masters relay race with race partner Graham Freear, who was enjoying being on the top step of the podium in his first-ever speed skating race.

Silver medallists were: Eve McInerney in the 500m, 1000m and 3000m elimination races and Flynn McGurk in the 500m and 2000m points race. Bronze medallists: Oli Johnson in the 1000m and McGurk in the 3000m elimination.

McGurk, Dylan Taylor and Warren Eve teamed up for the pupil boys’ relay race and finished in a respectable third spot, bringing home more bronze medals.

The full team were Mike McInerney, Eve McInerney, Oli Johnson, Flynn McGurk, Dylan Taylor, Warren Eve, James Eve, James Garwell and Arthur Buckler.

The team faced stiff competition in all categories and the races were tough.

Mike said afterwards: “Well done to everyone who raced this weekend, you should all be very proud of yourselves. All the training over the last few months came together.”

The team are now focussing their attention on the British Inline Marathon to be held at the Velopark at the Olympic Stadium on August 28.

The team train at Skaters Roller Skating Rink in Walpole Highway every Saturday from 5-7pm, all are welcome.
