Joe Perry from Chatteris is halfway to pulling off a sensational shock as he leads defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in the second session of their World Snooker Championship second-round match.

Perry cleared the table to go 7-4 up this afternoon (Friday) - the first player to reach 13 frames makes the quarter-finals.

O’Sullivan, a five-times title winner, is the hot favourite to retain his crown in Sheffield.

But Perry, who was 5-3 up last night, quickly replied to the Rocket’s opening salvo of 93 with a break of 68 to make the scores 6-4.

The 39-year-old then took the 13th frame 111-22.

The match is due to continue into tomorrow morning unless one of the players smashes in a succession of quick winning breaks.

Latest scores: Ronnie O’Sullivan (Eng) 5-7 Joe Perry (Eng). 0-106, 97-0 (58), 0-63 (57), 0-87 (82), 36-70 (55), 129-0 (117), 111-24 (75), 0-99 (99), 93-7 (93), 15-77 (68), 22-111, 97-0 (66).
