Roger Kay of Fenland Running Club rowed a marathon distance (42,195 metres) on a rowing machine at the Wisbech Hudson Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Kay said: “It has been a ‘bucket list’ wish to complete a marathon but although I managed almost 17 miles around Lake Coniston two years ago, that made me realise I’d never manage another nine-plus miles to run a full marathon.

“I’ve had it in the back of my mind I might be able to manage it on a static rower and this was an ideal opportunity to add to the funds raised by Jane Greenwood’s charity run by Fenland Running Club and March AC members earlier in May.”

His goal was to complete the distance within three and a half hours and he went through the half distance in 1.38.26 but slowed somewhat in the second half to complete the full 42.195m in 3.23.07, well within his target.

With monies donated by onlookers at the Hudson on Saturday and earlier pledges, he raised £187.25 to add to the £459.13 raised earlier by Jane Greenwood’s run to give a total of £646.38 raised for Fenland Cardiac Rehabilitation Service.
