Tydd St Giles karting prospect George Russell (13) stormed to the coveted CIK-FIA European Championship crown during his maiden campaign of international competition.
The 15-lap race at Zuera in Spain was the greatest achievement of the fledgling star’s career.
“When I crossed the finish line, it felt unbelievable,” he enthused.
“It took quite a while to sink in that I had won the European Championship. It was just amazing, and so much more special than anything I’d ever won before.
“This has topped everything else by a mile!”
Off the back of dual British title success at Mini Max level last year, the Wisbech Grammar School student has graduated to the more powerful KF3 class in 2011.
A strong sixth in the competitive 82-strong field in qualifying, the teenager was third on the grid in each of his four heat races.
He won the first and last of them to get sixth on the grid for the pre-final where he claimed an excellent second place despite struggling for power.
Alterations for the final did the trick, and George added on his start: “I timed it perfectly,” which resulted in him passing the pole-sitter on the second corner.
