STAFF from Peterborough’s two Sainsbury’s supermarkets will be on hand to help runners taking part in the 2012 Perkins Great Eastern Run.
Sainsbury’s, which has branches in Oxney Road and Bretton, is supplying nutritious snacks and fruit to re-energise runners when they cross the finish line on Sunday, October 14.
Volunteers from the stores will be handing out the energy replenishing foods as well as manning water stations along the half marathon and fun run routes.
The company’s partnership with the 2012 event does not end there, as Sainsbury’s employees will also be running the race.
Twenty-one-year-old Jake Musson, who has worked at the Oxney Road store for four years, will be running his first half marathon.
He said: “I have always wanted to run a marathon and this seemed like a good starting point.
“I used to run in sprint competitions when I was at school but I’ve never attempted these long distance runs.
“As I will be running to raise money for charity it has given me the extra drive to compete.
“I am trying to run at least three times a week with the aim of running 10 miles before the race. The most I’ve run is eight miles on the road and that didn’t feel too bad.”
Jake, who has worked as a full-time baker for a year, will be raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
He added: “One of my best friends, Rob Wildash, will be running the race with me. Rob’s mother suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.
“I have chosen to run for this charity as it gives me the extra incentive to put the work in and to complete the run. I’ve had a lot of support and would like to see the effort I’m putting in rewarded. What better way than to help a cause that has affected many people including ones that are close to me.”
Further employees are expected to take part in the 5km fun run.
