Is horse racing the most affordable sporting family day out in East Anglia over the Easter school holidays?

The sport of horse racing certainly thinks so.

It’s not only the second most popular spectator sport in the whole of Britain; it also offers better value for families than most.

As East Anglia prepares for five horse racing fixtures over the Easter school holidays (to Easter Monday April 21), Great British Racing – which markets the sport in Britain - looked at prices at sporting events in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

They found that for mum, dad and two teenage children, the lowest overall on-the-day admission cost will be: Premiership football - £sold out (Norwich City); Championship football - £79 (Ipswich Town); League 1 football - £52 (Peterborough United); Cricket - £44 (Essex – outside East Anglia); Conference football - £40 (Cambridge United); Rugby Union - £24 (Cambridge); Horse racing - £16 (Fakenham) and £20 (Huntingdon).

Great British Racing’s Chief Executive Rod Street said: “There is no question that, with accompanied under 18s being admitted free of charge at five fixtures in East Anglia over the Easter school holidays, horse racing is a fantastically affordable day out for families.

“Pound for pound, horse racing is terrific value, with a range of public enclosures to suit every pocket and free extra children’s entertainment provided on some days.”

Great British Racing’s findings in East Anglia are backed up by a major national report published at the end of 2013 by Deloitte business analysts whose Sport Business Group director Alan Switzer said: “It’s no surprise that racing is Britain’s second biggest spectator sport when it offers such excellent value for money.”

Horse racing fixtures over the Easter school holidays in East Anglia (accompanied under 18s enter free of charge): Wednesday 16 & Thursday 17: Newmarket (adult from £16 on the day); Easter Monday 21: Fakenham (from £8); Easter Monday 21: Huntingdon (from £10).
