The girls’ rugby team at Wisbech Grammar School has kicked off the season with a home friendly match against Leicestershire’s Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College on Sunday.
After winning the toss, the powerful Welbeck side started the first 20-minute game strongly against an inexperienced Wisbech team, dominating the opening of the match, but Adrienne Burt and Laura Temple made a spirited effort to shut down the attack.
As the Grammar School girls’ confidence grew, they started to make bigger tackles and finished the game on a positive note.
The Wisbech side launched the second game with Samantha Morris and Lucy Setchfield attacking vigorously, and captain Bridey de Jong-Daly controlled the game from scrum half, moving the ball out wide to Hettie West and Hannah Rushton, who made considerable ground on the wings.
The third and final game was the Grammar School’s best, with the girls showing confidence and backs Mae Walpole and Amber Jones mounting convincing tackles against the opposition’s biggest players.
Coach Miss Anna Dunnet said: “Although the final game was called early with an injury in each team, the Wisbech Grammar School girls came off the pitch extremely confident and proud of their achievements.
“All players should be extremely proud of themselves and we will go into our next match an even stronger side than before.”
