South Woodham Ferrers 8pts
Wisbech lost their first game of the new year against league leaders and promotion contenders South Woodham.
Wisbech were forced to make a few changes to the side which lost to Beccles before Christmas. Hooker Nathaniel Humphreys picked up a dead leg on Thursday during training. Second row Ben Chapman damaged his ribs during the Beccles game and Richard Cavill was banned for two weeks after a red card in the same game.
Wisbech brought in Joshua Searle and Neil Hunt. As the scoreline suggests, it was a very close encounter.
Wisbech looked to build pressure at the breakdown, unfortunately their old Achilles heel – giving away penalties for technical offences at the breakdown - allowed the visitors time to clear their lines.
There was no score at the break.
Wisbech improved their discipline in the second half. They started to build the pressure on the defence, but unfortunately on the two occasions when after attacking play Wisbech did cross the visitors’ try line, the referee failed to see that the ball had been grounded.
A Will Pettit penalty with 15 minutes to go nudged Wisbech into the lead but shortly after as Wisbech failed to win the ball at a line out South Woodham were able to move the ball wide and their winger out paced Wisbech’s defence and scored in the corner. With minutes to go the visitors added a further penalty.
“When you are down your luck always seems to go against you,” said club manager Cliff Humphreys. “Unfortunately the referee failed to see that we had scored our tries. Each squad member played his part today. It was a very spirited performance. The losing bonus point puts us fourth from bottom, one place away from relegation. We are away to Upminster on Saturday and hope to get something out of this game.” Training is on Wednesday night commencing at 7pm.
