Wisbech mixed team earn place at finals

Wisbech earned themselves a place at finals day in Sheffield with a Timson Mixed Plate quarter-final 2-1 victory against Letchworth.

Eleven years ago Wisbech beat Letchworth in the semi-finals of the men’s trophy and both sides had veterans of that legendary game which added a certain edge.

Wisbech should have had the game won by half time but for the Letchworth goalkeeper who pulled off a number of fine saves.

They finally found a way through with a flowing move that saw Jo Gomm finish well at the far post.

Letchworth battled hard and were rewarded with a well worked short corner goal that put the result in doubt. Wisbech struck straight back though with a close range Claire Apted goal.

Wisbech had to endure a few late scares particularly when Dan Martell was shown a yellow card for playing the ball above his shoulder.

Captain Drew Harvey was voted man of the match as Wisbech won through to finals weekend on June 11-12.

l Wisbech’s James Sheppard and Jon Shippey represented the East region in the Divisional Masters Hockey 40+ Tournament in Bristol. Both performed well and were invited to return to Bristol on June 5 for England trials.

They drew 1-1 with Scotland in the opening game. Sheppard’s first touch for the East was to pluck the ball out of the air as it headed toward the top corner. Tough tackling Shippey had an excellent game.

Their second game saw a 5-0 defeat to eventual winners Midlands which left East needing a win in their last group game with the tournament hosts, West.

East performed superbly in the game against West. Sheppard impressed the England selectors with a display which included two penalty stroke saves as East ran out 5-0 winners.

Aching limbs ruled the day for both sides as East took on holders South in the semi finals. An early South lead spurred East on and the score was tantalisingly poised at 2-1 to the South at half time. Two yellow cards cost East dearly and the South took advantage to win 5-1.

East won the third place play off against North comfortably. Shippey was one of only two outfield players that played every minute of every game.
