Wisbech Grammar school pupil Mollie Allen has returned home from a successful British national short course championships in Sheffield.
She finished sixth in the 50 metre backstroke out of 90 swimmers with a time of 28.31, which broke the East region record.
Mollie, 17, swims for City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) under coach Ben Negus.
Peterborough recently won the National East Midlands Arena League qualifying for the National Finals at Cardiff in April.
Mollie has captained the girls’ Arena League squad this season.
She attends Wisbech Grammar School and is in her first year of A level studies.
The school gives her so much support to allow her to continue with her training and busy pool schedule.
She swam in the Eastern Regional Championships in November, making five finals and becoming the East Region 200M Individual Medley champion.
She attended the ASA National Winter Meet (25M) 2015 Championships – competing in five individual events – achieving three personal best times and reached the A final in the 50 Backstroke, qualifying in 10th position from the original 90 entries.
In the final she swam against Georgia Davies, who won Commonwealth Games gold in the 50m and 100m backstroke events in Glasgow.
Georgia was also the silver European Medallist in Delhi, so Mollie’s performance against some world class swimmers made her achievement of making this final and recording a new personal best last weekend even more remarkable
In the final itself, Mollie not only finished an amazing 6th place, but also achieved another personal best of 28.31, and broke the Eastern Region record which previously stood at 28.58.
Her training regime is now focussed on achieving long course (50m) qualifying times for both the Rio Olympic Trials in April and the National Long Course Championships in August.
