Ely 43, Wisbech RUFC 19

Wisbech travelled to second placed Ely on Saturday quietly confident that they would get something out of the game given their recent run of form and despite a number of selection issues.

It was an encouraging first half performance in Greene King IPA Eastern Counties 1 by Wisbech as they battled to counter Ely’s powerful driving game.

Ely scored first with a converted try and shortly after slotted over a penalty.

However to their credit Wisbech fought back when from a five-metre line out and a solid drive to the line by the forwards saw Ramiondas Vinksna drive over. Shortly after and in similar fashion Nathan Goodale was on hand to touch down and with a Jack Malkin conversation Wisbech found themselves in front.

However as half-time approached Ely went into the lead with a converted try at 17-12.

Wisbech were still in the game but to Ely’s credit at the start of the second half the home side increased their intensity, Wisbech were caught on the back foot and as the pressure increased Wisbech capitulated as Ely ran in a number of tries at regular intervals.

Wisbech salvaged some pride with a try by Solomon Prestidge but Ely’s defence held out to prevent Wisbech from securing a try bonus point.

Sixth-spot Wisbech will need to regroup over the Christmas period as they face Newmarket away in the Junior Vase on January 3, 2015.
