Wisbech Speed Skaters resumed their outdoor race season this weekend at Birmingham Wheels race track.
On the banked oval track, team members Eve McInerney (Cat 3) and Flynn McGurk (Cat 4) made a clean sweep in all three races in their respective categories to take gold medals.
Dylan Taylor (Cat 5) also took gold with a determined performance gaining him a top slot. Warren Eve (Cat 5) gained a respectable fourth place in his first ever outdoor competition while six year old Arthur Buckler (Cat 7), Jo Tidman (Masters) and James Garwell (Cat 6) all took bronze medals after finishing third overall in each of their categories.
After lunch the age category races were held as the heavens opened. Eve McInerney held off the competition in testing conditions on wet wheels and took the win. McGurk secured a silver in his age category against a challenging Alex King from Essex.
The main event of the day was the 10k race for the over 16’s in the coveted Keith Lee Boot Event covering a gruelling 25 laps of the track. Mike McInerney held third position for most of the race and took the lead with four laps to go. In torrential rain he fought off competition from rival Michal Roman to take victory and retain the title for the second year in a row.
After the event Mike said: “It just shows you what a little hard work can achieve. Everybody raced brilliantly today with great results.”
This weekend’s team was made up of first time rat racer Paris, Arthur Buckler, James Garwell, Dylan Taylor, Warren Eve, Flynn McGurk, Eve McInerney, Jo Tidman and Mike McInerney. The team are now focussing on the outdoor British Championships held in London in July.
