Jamie Wootton, one of the young tennis players at Chatteris St Peter’s Tennis Club, came up with an innovative idea to raise money in memory of their tennis coach, Laurie Finch, who sadly passed away last year.

They organised a ‘sunrise to sunset challenge’ where the children (pictured) played tennis from 4.43am-9.21pm. The event raised a terrific £1,133.26 through donations and sponsorship, which will be presented to Macmillan Cancer Support.

The time spent on court totalled 61 hours 40 minutes, with 21 children and a young adult taking part, aged between 6-18. The participating players have all received coaching from the club, and many were coached by Laurie.

Organiser of the event, Helen Wootton, said: “Laurie was a terrific coach and this event was a great way of remembering all he did for the young members of our tennis club. The enthusiasm shown by all the youngsters involved was a credit to them all.”

Helen also would like to thank St Peter’s Tennis Club for the use of the venue, Mark Petrou and Graham Arthur for the food, friends for donations of cakes and Andrew Parsonage for the donated barbecue.
