Anglers hoping that giant pumping station doesn't effect Mecca

THE incredible size of the biggest pumping station ever built in Britain is taking shape on the Middle Level Drain at St Germans, near King's Lynn, to protect half the Fens from rising sea levels and increasingly-frequent storm surges.

When it becomes operational next February, it will be able to shift 1000 tonnes of water a minute.

The Middle Level Drain is fed by a system of drains stretching miles inland, including the Sixteen Foot, Forty Foot, Old Nene and Popham’s Eau.

It protects tens of thousands of homes and thousands of hectares of low-lying farmland, much of it below sea level, from flooding.

When the drainers reclaimed the Fens, they created mile upon mile of waterways which centuries later have become a Mecca for anglers.

We now have some of the best, most productive fishing in the country right on our doorstep, so let’s hope this massive pumping system does not draw the water off so fast that they become impossible to fish after prolonged rainfall through the winter months when they are usually at their best.

Terry Mansbridge

Memorial

The biggest match of the weekend was the Terry Mansbridge Memorial match fished on the South Holland Drain.

The venue was in cracking form with bream, skimmers and lots of roach showing.

Bourne rod Steve Pell took first place with 40lb 10oz taken from his peg close to Sharpes Bridge. He weighed in five big bream and topped them up with a net of skimmers taken on the tip with a worm and red maggot cocktail.

Holbeach rod Martin Holmes came in second, he had three bream along with skimmers and roach for 29lb 7oz; Tim Nash was third with a level 28lb followed by Andy Dixon with 17lb 4oz.

Finishing the frame with 16lb 4oz was Holbeach rod John Ivatt and finally John Spalton from Parson Drove with 16lb 2oz.

The South Holland Drain is the venue for this weekend’s King of the Fens match so all those fishing will be eager to get back on the match length I am sure after this result.

Mill View Tackle

Alders Farm Fishery was the venue for the Mill View Tackle lads on Sunday and although some big weights were taken it did not fish quite as well as in previous visits to the fishery.

Top rod was Kevin Peacock who weighed in 121lb 8oz of carp taken on pellet and paste.

It was the same for runner-up Kevin Medlock, he finished on 119lb 8oz followed by Barry Mason with 112lb.

This Sunday’s club match is on the Silver Fish Pool at Kingsland Fishery, drawing at 8.3am.

John Roper took the top spot with 3lb 14oz. Runner up on 3lb 4oz was Chris Burton followed by Shane Webb with 3lb 1oz.

Pidley

The strong winds of last week spoilt sport for the senior citizens at Pidley, just two anglers had any shelter at all and they took full advantage.
