Marina plans shelved
THROUGHOUT the fens on rivers and drains anglers and boaters have managed to get along quite well.
There are always going to be the odd incidents from time to time but I like to think that on the whole we all share some of the best, most diverse waterways in the country.
However marinas being built or at least proposed never goes down well with anglers as it has been proved that it does dramatically affect sport, so the news that the tiny River Nar is to be spared the massive pressure a marina would have brought has been welcomed by all angling bodies.
It might not be in the Premier League of rivers, where coarse and in particular pike fishing's concerned, but Norfolk's humble River Nar could be spared plans for a marina which would see it diverted through the middle of a nature reserve.
West Norfolk Council wanted to change the course of the river so a marina could be built on the outskirts of King's Lynn. Now officials want to mothball the scheme because of the credit crunch. That means the Nar, which holds a head of pike and also supports a dwindling run of sea trout, will be left in peace for now, but its something we should keep an eye on as the plans are still on the table.
Craig Kent Memorial
There was more than fishing being served up to the anglers in the recent Craig Kent Memorial match fished at Doddington Pool. The fishing was good but the after-match home-made pasties cooked by John Bird were said to be the highlight of the day! In total a fine 315 was raised for the Air Ambulance of East Anglia.
Result: 1 P Carter (19lb) 4pts and S Webb (18lb 8oz) 5pts; 2 L Redhead (46lb) 1pt and J Beavis (9lb 5oz) 13pts; 3 S Marsh, (22lb 12oz) 3pts and R Wilson, (12lb 6oz) 11pts.
South Holland
The South Holland Drain proved to be an excellent venue for round four of the King of the Fens league. On the individual front Wisbech rod Gary Cannon came out on top with a net of bream and skimmers weighing 23lb 15oz. A similar catch put Ricky Young into second place finished with 20lb 9oz.
On the team front Peterborough returned to form with a 24 point score but Stanjay Gold are way out in front on 11 points with nearest rivals Hotrods some way behind on 21.
Kingsland Fishery
One of the top carp waters in the area for those looking for double figure fish at a day ticket water has to be Kingsland Fishery Turves. Both carp lakes here are in cracking form and regularly see fish to 20lb taken.
They are also becoming popular with our local clubs for matches and Spratt’s AC were the latest club to give the small carp lake a try and it didn’t let them down either.
Top rod with a fine 124lb was Peter Spriggs, he fished pellet and paste on the long pole line netting carp to 7lb. A much bigger stamp of fish found their way into runner up Peter Parlett’s net, he fished bread on rod and line weighing in several carp to double figures for 91lb 12oz. Third place went to Neil Drake, he fished meat close in for 86lb 8oz.
On the Silverfish Pool at Kingsland, Mill View Tackle found the going tough, despite a good ripple on the water only the odd peg produced a decent weight with Steve Smalley coming out on top with 34lb 4oz. It was tight at the top, pushing Steve all the way was Kevin Medlock who finished on a level 34lb followed by Trevor Watson with 24lb. This weekend will see the club back at Head Fen Lakes, with the draw at 8.30am.
Chatteris WMC
It has not been easy fishing for the Chatteris Working Men’s club anglers of late on their club waters. In the midweek match Steve Newell took a net of small skimmers and roach to record the top weight of 5lb 9oz, but then it all fell away.
John Roper was second with 15oz, followed by Chris Burton on 14oz. It was a lot better in Sunday’s club match which saw Mark Dunham in pole position on 7lb 10oz. Runner up with 5lb 10oz was the consistent Steve Newell followed by Gary Burton on 3lb 3oz.
Magpie Pool
In the D S Smith works club match fished on the Magpie pool at Pidley most of the anglers found the fish feeding well. Mark Cross came out on top with 69lb 7oz taken from peg 19. Mark fished pellet up in the water on pellet. The same tactics saw Kevin Shelly take second place with 64lb 13oz followed by John Millard who fished meat for 52lb 7oz.
North Level
The North Level Drain continues to fish well for all the evening matches as well as the Sunday events. In the Tuesday match John Spalton came out on top with a net of skimmers and roach taken on caster for 9lb 14oz. Bob Fitzjohn was second with 7lb 9oz followed by Andrew Spence on 7lb 7oz.
Thursday’s match produced a few better fish, March rod Bob Fitzjohn taking the honours with 13lb 6oz, his catch included a massive eel, a good tench along with skimmers and roach. Andy Greenwood took second place on 8lb 1oz followed by Andrew Spence with a level 5lb.
In Sundays club match fished on the Main Road section a few of the big bream showed up with Mick Gamble weighing in a specimen of 6lb, together with roach and skimmers he weighed in 10lb 11oz. But that was not enough to see off Ray Groome, the “whip king” took over 200 small fish to top the field with a fine 13lb all taken on pinkie. Third place went to Steve Hanson on 8lb 12oz.
Those fishing the evening matches should note the change of draw time for the Tuesday and Thursday evenings, now 5.15, fish 6-9pm, draw at Main Road. Sunday’s draw noon, fish 1-6pm.
