Perry hoping to extract revenge in China

JOE Perry takes on Jamie Cope in the first round of the Roewe Shanghai Masters this afternoon in the first big competition of the snooker season.

The Chatteris potter flew out to China last Friday and the draw has provided him with the chance to exact revenge on his World Championship conqueror Cope who beat Perry 10-6 in the first round last April.

Perry, rated at 12 in the world, said: "It is a quick chance to get revenge for what happened at The Crucible and one I fully intend to take.

If Perry wins his first match he is likely to come up against World Championship runner-up Shaun Murphy in the second round.

“Practice did not go so well early on but it has picked up lately and I have some quality opposition to play against. I feel in good nick after the break and am raring to go.”

Perry is disappointed that he is not playing in the televised Premier League this season after reaching the semi-finals last season.

He added: “It might be a blessing really. I put so much into it in the first half of last season that in the second half the season I lost my form. I also kept running into Ronnie O’Sullivan when I was playing well and things collapsed after losing to him in The Masters.

“I lost a couple of first round matches and then went out early in the World Championships as well, so it really went downhill.”

There are only six ranking tournaments this season and Perry, who is keen to stay among the among world top 16, said: “I want to have a good start to the season in next week’s competition and the Grand Prix in October and I’ve been working hard for the last four-to-six weeks and hopefully it will pay off.

“There are no easy matches in snooker these days. The top 32 in snooker is very strong and you always have to be at your best.”
