SNOOKER: Perry topples world champ

JOE PERRY scored a sensational 9-5 win over world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan in the UK Snooker championships in Telford on Tuesday night by taking seven consecutive frames.

It was the first time that the Chatteris man has beaten O'Sullivan in a rankings tournament in seven attempts and he produced some of the best snooker of his career to achieve it.

Perry had won the first two frames of the match but O'Sullivan then took the next five frames with three century breaks. Perry won the final frame of the session to make it 5-3.

In the evening though it was all Perry as he forged into a 5-6 lead before O'Sullivan sensationally conceded the 12th frame by deliberately flicking the white away with his cue when just 23-0 down.

Even in the final frame, O'Sullivan had the chance to keep the match alive after Perry missed a simple red, but a missed black after a run of 41 allowed his opponent to wrap things up.

"It's been a good competition for me," said Perry, who reached the quarter-finals for the fifth time. "I could see Ronnie getting anxious and running out of patience. I've played him a few times this season and I feel comfortable against him now, I'm not intimidated. When I beat him for the first time in the Premier League it got the fear factor out of the way."

As for O'Sullivan's concession of the 12th frame, Perry joked: "Any gifts at this time of year are gratefully received!"

O'Sullivan who was fined for his moment of petulance, paid tribute to Perry by saying: "I just got outplayed on the day. He played great - I wasn't going to win today. His safety was great, he scored when he got in and didn't miss much. Sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up."

Perry now meets Marco Fu in the last eight
