Veteran wicketkeeper John Gilson carried his bat for 87 in March 2nd’s opening game of the season - a narrow one wicket defeat at Bluntisham.

The visitors made 187-6, with Ryan Wright (29), skipper John Wallis (22) and Adrian Bussey (21) also contributing. Stuart Arnold took 3-32 after tea.

Gilson also became the oldest March player to score a first team half-century in the seven wicket defeat to Ketton at The Avenue on Sunday.

The 59-year-old hit 67 in the 167-9 total, with Ben Pyle making 56 in the Rutland League Division 2.

He then took a one-handed catch at slip from the off-spin of Ash Vodnala, who returned figures of 2-25 from his 12 overs.

* March Town CC are hosting a Talents and Favours evening in the pavilion on Friday, May 8.

In partnership with March Hockey Club the two clubs are staging their special fundraising event at the clubhouse with the new club captain Jody Betts taking on the role as auctioneer.

The cricket club are looking to raise money towards their major capital project of 2015, new double bay cricket nets. The club already has planning permission for the facility and currently have a grant application awaiting a decision in the next few months. Double bay nets will significantly improve the coaching facilities, which will help to develop the young players.

The hockey club are raising funds for the provision of more coaching facilities, concentrating on the junior section along with equipment to encourage new juniors.

Among the array of over 40 items available on the night are two tickets for an Ashes Test match at Trent Bridge.

Prior to the auction the evening will begin with a Twenty/20 game between the cricket club and the Hockey club at 6pm. It is hoped to start the auction afterwards at about 8.30pm.
