James Williams starred with 7-17 as Cambs Tucker League leaders Wisbech Town CC polished off Cambridge NCI in double-quick time on Saturday by an eight-wicket margin.
Williams, coming on as first change, bagged his scalps in nine overs and Craig Johnson took 2-26 in six as NCI were skittled for 82 in 29 overs.
Captain Alan Burton said of the paceman’s feat: “It was a good spell – Willo just bowled full and straight, really, on a hard wicket. It was just what we needed.”
Conscious of the weather, Wisbech hit off the runs in 12 overs and the match was over before 6pm.
Burton added: “It was spitting all the time but it rained just after we finished. We just went out in a positive way, to play our shots.
“All the pressure is coming off as we keep winning games. Ramsey got 20 points so we needed to win to keep our 30-point lead.”
It means that going into the final month, Wisbech Town CC are on 369 points, Ramsey 339, Godmanchester 330, Foxton 310, Sawston CC 270, and March Town CC 266 to close out the top six.
