Wisbech Town put a marker down for the season by beating March Town by 151 runs in the Rutland League Division One derby on Sunday.

The day before, Chris Budd made a splendid start to his career at The Avenue with his second half-century for March 1st Xl in their
72-run win over Downham Town.

In just two games, former Peterborough Town player Budd looks the sort of gritty, compact opening batsman the club have been missing since the departure of Andrew Mills to Australia following the 2009 season.

He held the top order together in the annual 45 over pre-season friendly, as the visitors made inroads into the March batting line-up at 58-4 off the first 18 overs.

A sixth wicket stand of 59 was the turning point, with last season’s Player of the Year Steve Seymour coming in at an unfamiliar No7.

He cracked a rapid 39, that contained six boundaries, before both he and Budd were caught.

Ben Pyle made a valuable 19 in the 179-8 total.

Seymour and skipper Chris Ringham conceded just 11 runs from the first 10 overs - Ringham taking 1-3 off six before Stuart Mills and Aussie Stephen Shaw both bagged a brace, as Downham fell to 30-5 off the first 20 overs.

The side who beat Wisbech the previous weekend never recovered from that position and with Toby Nulty taking 3-10 with his newly found leg-spin, they were dismissed for 107.

March Man of the Match: Chris Budd.

March cruised to an opening day 108-run victory against Long Sutton.

Openers David Hodson (51) and Chris Budd (63) shared in a 107 stand, before a quick-fire 51 not out from James Harradine took the total to 206-3 off 40 overs.

Stuart Mills bagged 3-13 and Aussie Stephen Shaw 2-16 as the visitors were dismissed for 98.
