DAVID Wood hit 28 off the final over to complete a swift nine-wicket rout by Wisbech Town of Oakham in the Rutland League Division 2 on Sunday.
Wood smashed 62 not out in partnership with Danny Emmington 19 not out as Wisbech reached their 103 target in just 12 overs.
Dom Stannard had earlier departed for 15 before Rohit Shukla was the unlucky bowler to concede 28 runs to Wood’s power hitting.
Gary Freear was the star with the ball, taking 6-16, Carl Pope 2-30 and Drew Jones 1-13 as Oakham were dismissed for 102 inside 40 overs.
The second team lost by 103 runs to a strengthened bottom of the table Kimbolton & Catworth who at one stage were 127-0 off 14 overs in Rutland League Division 5.
The young Wisbech team stuck to their task to restrict Kimbolton to 278-2 declared as their opener Simon Lambert hit an unbeaten 132. Martin Parrin steadied the attack with 1-53.
Wisbech opener Keith Jakings replied with 52 in Town’s 175-7, while tailenders Harry Johnson 23 not out and Hassan Ahmed 21 not out enjoyed themselves.
The Fenland Invitation Trophy Ernie Wool Cup tie against Chatteris was abandoned. Chatteris had just begun their reply to Wisbech’s 106 all out when the rain halted proceedings.
Wisbech Town captain Gary Freear has called up Danny Emmington and Kieran Haynes from the second and third teams for Saturday’s Cambs Tucker League game at Godmanchester.
The duo come in because Henry Rosier and Ben Allsop are unavailable.
Freear said: “It is a good chance to see what they can do at this level, and I’m just going with my instinct.”
Like everyone else, Wisbech’s Division 1 game at Khalsa was rained off at the weekend.
Freear said: “Obviously we wanted to keep playing. We all play for enjoyment and the lads want to play every week.
“It would have been nice to get a game after the previous week’s good win, but it is not going to affect us as everyone else’s game was off too.”
