The last hurrah of the current Type R

They’re only going to make 100 of them. For some the end of the run of the current Honda Civic Type R would be cause for mourning. Suitably, the final limited edition wears black.

Actually, the Black Edition is more red and black, a colour scheme with something of the nightclub about it rather than the night. So there is black paint on the outside, with red rims on the alloys and the endplates of the wings. Inside it’s the same, a mix of black with red highlights.

And, well, that’s kind of it. Underneath it’s a stock GT spec Type R, so you’re getting plenty of performance and charisma to go with the new look, but perhaps we were hoping for more. Admittedly you’re already getting the adaptive dampers, limited-slip differential, that bonkers aerodynamic package and the R mode, so maybe Honda didn’t feel they had much room for manoeuvre.

Either way, this Black Edition is in the showrooms now for a cost of £32,300. Whether it has enough to make it ‘a real collector’s piece’ as Honda claims only time will tell. Us, we’ll wait for the new Type R, which will be coming off the production lines before the end of this year.
