March unveiling of the new mid-engined sports car

It looks likely that Renault will take the wraps off its new A120 at the Geneva motor show this spring. Europe will see the first wave of the 1955 cars that will be made, with the UK and Japan getting cars in the autumn.

Given that the tagline is ‘Alpine is back!’ there is some speculation that the Renault name will not be used with the new sports car. As yet few details have been confirmed, but we are certain that it is mid-engined and rear-wheel drive, so it should be fun.

Powerplants are likely to be based around a 1.8-litre version of the 1.6-litre engine in the Renault Clio RS. Power is likely to be around 250bhp although a 300bhp version is likely. Sources have confirmed that a 0-62mph time will be 4.5sec.

The A120 will be in part a homage to the A110 of the 1960s and ‘70s, and spy photographs have only served to whet the public’s appetite. Those lucky potential buyers in Europe will need to put down a 2000 Euro deposit, and they’ll also need to download the Alpine app to finalise their car’s specification.

Prices are expected to be around £46,750 to £51,000, roughly the same as a Porsche Cayman.
