UK car making continues to boom

It’s almost a decade and a half since Britain’s car factories were producing more vehicles than they are right now.

That’s one of the many promising facts borne out by figures just released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) for UK car production to the end of August. These show that British drivers are buying 6.2% more cars than in the same period last year – and that exports are up by 13.3%.

Even following the EU referendum earthquake, the export figure for August alone is up by 10.2% on 2015.

And if you don’t like percentages, chew on this: so far in 2016, 877,523 British-built cars have been sold abroad.

‘British car producers are exporting a diverse range of new models that are in demand across the world thanks to multi-billion pound investments made in UK plants over the past few years,’ said SMMT boss Mike Hawes.

‘August’s strong performance is welcome news for the economy, which depends on this thriving sector for an increasing share of UK exports.’
