Two children’s centres have launched their programme of summer holiday activities.

The March & District and Chatteris & Villages Children’s Centres, which are both run by Ormiston Children & Families Trust, will be putting on weekly ‘Cultural Celebration Play Days and Picnics’ across the March and Chatteris areas.

Lewis Greening, Ormiston’s Community Engagement & Information Officer, said: “Throughout the summer we always run some summer holiday play days and picnics, but this year we’ve tagged a cultural theme on to them to try and encourage more eastern European families to come along and get involved. There’s going to be craft activities and cultural snacks and dancing, and each week there will be a different attraction, including a reptile show, inflatable play equipment and sports sessions.

“We’ve also had some popular Eastern European children’s stories translated which we’re going to be reading too, to allow the children to listen to stories from different parts of the world. The events are open to families from all cultures and we thought it would be a nice way to bring different members of the community together.”

The Ormiston Children’s Centres have also organised a ‘Bubbly Bugs Wiggle Jiggle Day’, which is specifically for families with children who have special educational needs and disabilities.

Lewis explained: “We already run a Bubbly Bugs group for children with additional needs in our children’s centre in Chatteris on a Friday, and the ‘Wiggle Jiggle Day’ is an extension of that. Currently we don’t have a similar group set up in March, but it is something we’re exploring. We’ve found an organisation in March called Facet, which works with adults with additional needs and learning disabilities. It’s got really good facilities, like a state-of-the-art sensory room, which it rents out. We’ve hired the building for the morning and will be putting on a variety of different craft and play activities – all themed around bugs, hence the name! – and we want families with children who have special educational needs and disabilities to come along and join in.

“We’re hoping this will help to raise the profile of Facet - we want to let as many families know about the facilities there as we possibly can. As well as building links with Facet, we want to gauge what the interest is like in March for this sort of group. Hopefully we’ll be able to set something up on a more permanent basis.”
