Dropping a cigarette butt in Wisbech Market Place has landed a smoker with a £320 court bill.
John Connors, of Bevis Lane, Wisbech St Mary, was fined £200 for dropping the butt at King’s Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
He was also ordered to pay £120 towards prosecution costs.
The 24-year-old failed to appear in court for the hearing, but magistrates found him guilty of the offence in his absence.
Susanna Chowdhury, prosecuting, said Connors was seen dropping the cigarette butt by a Fenland District Council street scene officer on April 8.
She said: “He told the officer ‘Can you let me off? I’m sorry, I’ll pick it up.’
“The nearest litter bin was six feet away.”
Connors was issued with a fixed penalty notice for £75, which would have been reduced to £50 if paid within 21 days.
Miss Chowdhury said Connors failed to pay, so the case was brought to court.
