AN independent pensioner celebrated her 102nd birthday on Friday.
Winnie Brett was born in Tollesbury, near Malden, Essex on August 5, 1909.
She married her late husband Hubert at the age of 21 and they were married for 58 years before he died in 1989.
They had two daughters, Angela and Gillian, but sadly Gillian died in 1991. Winnie has two granddaughters, three grandsons and two great-grandsons.
When she was younger, Winnie worked in an office in Chelmsford and the couple then owned a printers and newsagent in Great Dunmow.
In the late 1960s, she volunteered at Stansted Airport, providing a friendly face for Ugandan refugees fleeing dictator Idi Amin.
Winnie moved to Wisbech in 1999 after suffering a stroke at the age of 90 and she now lives at Lyncroft Care Home, in Wisbech, where the staff say she remains very independent.
She spent her birthday with family and even used Skype for the first time to talk to her grandson, who is currently in Australia.
