An Upwell couple are due to set off tomorrow (Thursday) on a 1,000 mile car challenge to Barcelona and hope to raise over £3,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.
Karen Harvey, a creative consultant, and her boyfriend Adam Ruck, UK and Ireland Project Manager for Yara Air1, have purchased an “old banger” and will be wearing fancy dress as they travel to Barcelona planning to arrive on May 26.
They have taken up the Barcelona Banger challenge where teams are encouraged to raise money for a charity of their choice. Karen and Adam will join 70 other teams starting from Calais.
Karen said: “Adam and I are very excited about our trip and are confident our old banger will keep going, even on the last day when we shall be driving over the Pyrenees. A friend has made a fantastic job of adding stickers and signage to the bodywork so no-one will miss us en-route. Our theme is 1970’s Glitz and we have called our team “Glitter Mitten”.
Karen added: “We are proud to be doing it to support the amazing work done by EACH. Children who have life-threatening conditions really need the support of charities like EACH to help them and their families lead as normal lives as possible. EACH doesn’t just give end of life care in their hospices, they give families the time and support to be able to have the freedom of a normal family life and enjoy everyday things in their own homes. The simple things of life mean so much, and therefore any money we can raise can help make that little bit of difference.”
Karen Newton, EACH Cambridgeshire Fundraiser said: “As far as I know this is the first time EACH has been represented at the Barcelona Banger Challenge.”
