Battling to save Welney park

Villagers are battling to save a £60,000 meadow park from West Norfolk Council development plans.

Welney Recreational Ground Users Group have spent months transforming an eyesore into the Sandgate Meadow Park, which includes a sensory area, orchard and play park.

But the site is under threat after the district council has lodged an application to build 16 homes on the site in Chestnut Avenue.

Group chairman Paul Fox says: “The 50 members of RUG and many other residents in our village are disgusted by these borough council plans to destroy a unique and brand new green space amenity.

“We will not rest until this planning application is withdraw. Serious questions must now be asked about the conduct and leadership of the property services department.”

Cllr David Pope, who represents the ward and is also a cabinet member for leisure and public spaces, will be holding a meeting with planning officers to find out what is happening with this application.

He said: “I shall be making representations at the planning committee.

“The group has been very enthusiastic in making an area which is a wonderful asset for the village.

“To me, this planning application it is absolutely ridiculous.”
