Big match memorial for former Wisbech keeper

The first memorial football match in tribute to a former Wisbech Town player who lost his battle against cancer is set to take place.

Wisbech charity football team, Macmillan FC, is hosting the Ovendale Memorial Cup match at Gorefield Playing Field on Sunday, December 7, in memory of goalkeeper Mark Ovendale, who died in 2011 at the age of 37.

The match, which starts at 2pm, is being played between Macmillan FC and Hatters Talk FC from Luton, where Mark for Luton Town.

All money raised on the day will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support and SoLYD (Supporters of Luton Youth Development).

The Ovendale Cup, which has been sponsored by Double G Clothing from King’s Lynn, will be presented on the day by Mark’s mum and sister Janet and Tracey Ovendale.

The match is open to the public and Macmillan FC said the more people who watch the better.

There will be lots going on before and after the game, including an opportunity for youngsters to meet Santa.

There will also be surprise guests, food available and a raffle with prizes, including tickets to football matches at Northampton and Stockport, signed football shirts and boots and much more.
