Friends rally to help family of sick baby
It will be a case of eyes down next week as Emneth Central Hall hosts a bingo in aid of a family with a baby battling a rare type of cancer.
Friends of Beck Newton, 28, and Gavin Borley, 27, have rallied to help raise money to enable them to be at the hospital bedside of four-month-old Paislee-Blu, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the end of last month.
Among those trying to raise funds to help cover the cost of travelling to hospital in Cambridge, as well as car parking, food and other bills, is Sallyann Davison, who is helping to organise the bingo next Friday, May 25.
She said the family have been devastated by Paislee-Blu’s diagnosis, which came after her parents noticed her stomach had enlarged and she was crying a lot.
She explained Gavin is self-employed and is currently unable to work because he needs to be with his young daughter and Beck is still on maternity leave, which is why the fundraising effort has been launched to help ease the couple’s financial stress.
The couple, who have two other daughters – Miley, seven, and four-year-old Ruby – have been at Paislee-Blu’s bedside at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge since she started chemotherapy.
Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer which forms in certain types of nerve tissue. It most frequently starts from one of the adrenal glands, but can also develop in the neck, chest, abdomen, or spine. Symptoms may include bone pain, a lump in the abdomen, neck, or chest.
Paislee-Blu’s tumour is in her liver, adrenal glands and bone marrow and is causing her difficulty with breathing and has also displaced some of her organs..
A GoFundMe page has been set up with a target of £7,000 and in just over two weeks the total was already at £5,369. It is hoped the bingo at Emneth Central Hall will boost that further, but Sallyann said they are in need of more prizes for the night.
A Paislee-Blu’s Journey Facebook page has also been set up with over 500 people joining to support the family and advertise fundraising events.
Her parents are also posting updates on Paislee-Blu and her progress.
The prize bingo next Friday runs from 5.30pm to 10pm at Emneth Central Hall, Gaultree Square, Emneth.
