Butterfly and Wildlife Park to close

THE area has lost a second tourist attraction as Long Sutton Butterfly and Wildlife Park announced it will be closing next year.

The announcement comes just weeks after Woodhouse Farm Park in Friday Bridge closed its doors for the last time due to rising costs.

Money too is at the root of the Butterfly Park closure, with director Peter Smeaton revealing the business is losing about £100,000 a year.

He said their biggest cost is wages, followed by heat and feed, and the price of everything has gone up.

Another blow this season was the theft of a safe containing £7,000 in takings.

The animals at the park, including insects, reptiles, birds of prey, llamas and water buffalo, will be rehomed.

The park was set up by Peter and Julie Worth in 1987, who ran it until 2007.

A closure date has not been set yet, but Mr Smeaton believes it could be at the end of next August.
