THERE was drama in March town centre this morning (Thursday) after a car went up in flames.
The Robin Reliant was parked in a disabled space next to Barclays Bank in Broad Street when it ignited at just before 11am.
Eyewitness Tony Savage described seeing a fire in the bonnet area before it rapidly spread to the rest of the car.
“It went up very quickly,” he said. “Two people were standing near it and people were shouting at them to get back in case it exploded.”
He said there were a couple of small explosions when the tyres blew from the extreme heat and another one when the flames reached the fuel tank.
A red Chrysler Cruiser parked next to it was also damaged by the fire, with blistering along the side of the vehicle and smoke damage inside.
The fire was extinguished with two hose reels and the fire crew returned to March Fire Station by 11.45am. The cause of the fire was accidental.
