Chatteris man loses thousands in dating scam

A Chatteris man has lost several thousand pounds after being conned on a dating website.

The man, who is in his 60s, was contacted by a woman claiming to be from Ghana and they started exchanging emails.

The woman said she intended to visit him and he believed they would start a relationship but, after gaining his trust, she began asking for money to help pay for an Ebola injection for her and her family and to buy mobile phones.

The victim then sent several thousand pounds via the Post Office but has not heard from the woman since.

Police believe there may have been other such crimes that have not been reported.

Anyone who has been a victim of the scam should call 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
