Clerk’s future still a mystery

Wisbech Town Council remained tight-lipped yesterday (Tuesday) over the future of its suspended clerk Erbie Murat.

An extra-ordinary meeting of the town council on Monday night discussed the issue, hearing a report from a working party. But Mayor Viv MacRae refused to give details of the discussion or its outcome other than to issue a vague statement. She said Monday night’s decision would be made public at the next scheduled council meeting.

It has previously been speculated that the matter of Mr Murat’s suspension for alleged misconduct would go to an outside body to determine his fate.

In the weeks since his suspension, Mr Murat has made counter claims against various members of the Town Council, including the leader David Oliver and his deputy Jonathan Farmer, alleging that he was bullied and intimidated by them.

Those claims were thrown out by Fenland Council’s Conduct Committee because members felt it was wrong to intervene, while there was potential for legal action.
