FENLAND District Council decided on Wednesday (October 19) to seek a mandatory court injunction to remove the group of Travellers currently illegally occupying a site at Redmoor Lane near Wisbech.
Its Planning Committee accepted the recommendation from a detailed report from officers that spelt out all the options open to the council.
The report advised against taking immediate direct action to forcibly remove the occupants, which it said would be too “draconian” in view of the number of families and children on the site.
It also said that prosecution would not result in compliance and that a fine was unlikely to bring about a remedy to the breaches of planning law on the site.
It concluded that seeking a mandatory injunction through the courts was “proportionate, necessary and expedient in the public interest”.
