POLICE are warning people to be on their guard following two distraction thefts on elderly women in supermarket car parks including in March.
The incidents involved women in their 80s being asked for directions by men who had poor English while an accomplice stole items from their handbags in their cars.
The first happened at about 11am on October 22 when a woman returning to her car at Sainsbury’s in Huntingdon was approached by a man who seemed to be saying his wife was pregnant and he needed directions to a hospital.
While the victim was speaking to him someone stole cash and bank cards from her handbag on the passenger seat of her car.
The second happened at about 4.30pm the same day when a woman parked at Sainsbury’s in March had a purse stolen from her handbag in the same circumstances.
DC Kayleigh O’Brien, who is investigating, said: “I would urge people to be vigilant when returning to their vehicles and take care to ensure their belongings are on their person or secure at all times. Anyone with information about these crimes should not hesitate to get in touch.”
