Downham Market man banned after ‘stupid mistake’

A drink-driver made a “stupid mistake” by taking his girlfriend’s car to buy more alcohol.

Jake Holman, 24, of Nelson Avenue, Downham, has been banned for 17 months after being stopped by the police on the A10.

Prosecutor Mrs Delia Matthews told West Norfolk Magistrates earlier today (Thursday, February 4) stopped the Renault Clio drive by Holman while carrying out routine checks during the early hours of January 19.

He failed a breath test and gave a reading of 61 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Along with drink-driving, he also admitted taking a car without consent along with driving without insurance and otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

In mitgation Charlotte Winchester told the court that Holman had been to his girlfriend’s home where he had been drinking with his brother. She had gone to bed at 11pm.

When they had run out of alcohol, Miss Winchester said Holman made the “stupid decision” to use his girlfriend’s car to travel the short distance to a garage to buy more.

Miss Winchester said: “It was a stupid mistake to have made and he is very sorry for it.

Holman was fined a total of £935 along with being ordered to pay £100 costs.
