Driver has narrow escape on Wisbech road after tree smashed on to her car
A driver had a miracle escape yesterday (Tuesday) after high winds sent a tree toppling on to her car.
Alice Simpson is counting her lucky stars after the incident which happened on Dowgate Road in Leverington at around 12.40pm.
She said: "I was just on my way home to complete some admin for work when I saw two pedestrians frantically waving at me on the side of the road.
"I slammed on my brakes and as I did so this tree came toppling down from the side of the road and landed on my bonnet."
Alice, who works for Cambridgeshire County Council, believes without the intervention of pedestrian Angie Horton and her companion alerting her to the danger the incident could have been a lot worse.
"If I hadn't put my brakes on then the tree would more than likely either had smashed into the windscreen or come down on the roof of the car. Fortunately I wasn't hurt at all, but there is some question over whether my car is a write off," said Alice.
She said the walkers told her they had heard the sound of the roots cracking and realised what was happening, which is why they had waved. They too had a narrow escape as they had to jump out of the way.
As result of the fallen tree police were called and traffic was forced to find an alternative route while the blockage was cleared from the road.
Despite being completely blameless in the accident and trying to avoid being hit by the tree, Alice has been left counting the cost of what happened as she has been told by insurers that even though she is not at fault, her insurance claim for the damage to her Audi Quattro will still be classed as a 'blame' claim.
