Wisbech Town striker Dubi Ogbonna is staying at the club after St Ives became the second club this season to try and lure him away from the Fenland Stadium.
St Ives could not speak to the player until Monday, but Ogbonna, speaking exclusively to the Citizen after Saturday’s win at Mildenhall, has already made his decision to stay put.
Ogbonna said: “I will not be going to St Ives. Why would I when I am already at a very good club and enjoying my football.
“We are going well in the league and are in the FA Vase so it was not a difficult decision.”
Ogbonna has scored 13 goals since joining the club in the summer from Soham Town Rangers where he scored 20 goals in his first season in 2009.
The 21-year-old also turned down a chance to join Wroxham last month and Steve Appleby feels that the club will get more approaches.
He said: “Everybody wants a goalscorer. Dubi has had a number of clubs and needs the stability at this stage of his career. He can get 25 goals for us this season and then more clubs will come knocking.”
After ending Thurlow Nunn Premier Division leaders Mildenhall’s record run of seven straight wins, Wisbech now face another tough game against fifth placed Dereham at the Fenland Stadium on Saturday.
He added: “Hopefully Saturday’s win will send out a message to the rest of the clubs. It was a game we could not afford to lose.
“Dereham like to play good football and have been chasing at the top of the table in recent seasons. It gives us a chance to make another big statement. We go into the game with confidence after our last two wins.”
Goalkeeper Tom Roberts, who has just returned to action after 10 weeks on the sidelines, has been loaned out to UCL side Boston Town.
