Electricity pylon collapsed onto car after being struck during Whittlesey accident

The Fire Service has given more details after a crash on Saturday afternoon, which saw 35 homes lose power after an electricity pylon was struck.

Crews from Stanground, Dogsthorpe and Manea, together with the north roaming fire engine and a water carrier, attended the incident on Ramsey Road in Whittlesey at 5.39pm.

A car had collided with an electric pylon, which had then collapsed onto the vehicle, and the electric charge had set fire to foliage, which spread to the car and to peat under the car, which further spread to the surrounding area.

Crews used two jets, one hose reel jet and beaters to extinguish the fire.

Crews returned the following day to deal with the remaining hot spots in the peat.
