Emneth veteran finally receives Second World War medal
After 70 years, a veteran has finally received a medal to mark his sacrifice. Tommy Thompson, 90, of Emneth, was presented with the Arctic Star medal by Wisbech mayor Michael Hill last week. Mr Thompson was among the hundreds of sailors completing the “worst journey in the world” by sailing north of the Arctic Circle to deliver vital supplies to help the Russian war effort against the Nazis.
The convoys, under constant attack by U-Boats and aircraft, lost over 3,000 crew members, 104 merchantmen and 16 military vessels. The threat was not only from the enemy but from the frozen sea and ice flows. Tommy had previously been awarded the United Kingdom Merchant Seafarers Veterans’ Badge.
