NHS Cambridgeshire is now in its second year of running the EnergiZe programme. EnergiZe is for children aged 7-11 who are above their ideal weight and after successfully piloting two programmes in March and Huntingdon, six new programmes are due to be launched across Cambridgeshire starting on Saturday (October 1).
As one in three children are over the healthy weight range for their age and height - now is the perfect time to help direct them to a brighter, healthier future. The EnergiZe programme is completely free and is a family based programme which looks to support families to make positive changes to their child’s lifestyle. Every week the family will take part in a two hour interactive workshop which focuses on healthy eating and keeping active. The sessions are conducted by local, enthusiastic instructors, who deliver the sessions in a friendly, vibrant atmosphere.
Bill and Sally have just completed EnergiZe with their daughter May.
They said: “EnergiZe has helped our daughter and us as parents in the battle to understand weight gain and the importance of regular physical activity. EnergiZe has enabled us to make informed choices about the types of foods we eat and has encouraged us to fit regular activity into our busy lives instead of making excuses. We’re enjoying being more active as a family, having more energy and feeling really happy about achieving individual goals we have set ourselves. But EnergiZe is more than simply education for us – it has been a well constructed programme to motivate the whole familyand build good habits for a life time.” (Bill and Sally, and daughter May)
Val Thomas, Consultant in Public Health at NHS Cambridgeshire said: “ EnergiZe is a wonderful opportunity for children and their families to become fit and healthy in a fun environment and help prevent ill health in later life”
