AN Upwell man believes he has spotted a rare bird at Well Creek.

Derek Nevatt was very surprised to see what he believes to be a white stork. The bird is rarely seen in this country and usually winters in Africa.

He was working on his boat on December 9 when he saw a car pull over and the occupants start taking pictures.

“At first, I thought they were taking pictures of my boat, then I saw the stork, so I grabbed my camera.

“It was just walking around, looking for food on the ice.

“There are people who have lived here their whole lives and have never seen a stork. It’s very rare.”

Mr Nevatt said the bird was bigger than a heron, standing over two feet tall, and had a ring on its leg.

Emma Brand, from Welney WWT (Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust), said it was difficult to say the bird was definitely a white stork.

She said it may have escaped from somewhere, as Mr Nevatt got quite close to it, or it may have just been hungry enough to put aside its fear.

“However it was a nice sighting,” she said, “and he got some cracking pictures.”
