Estover Playing Field in March is saved

March’s Estover Playing Field has been saved for future generations following a momentous vote by Cambridgeshire County Councillors.

Earlier today (Tuesday, January 27) members of the general purposes committee have voted to lease the whole field on a 99 year lease to increase sports provision in the town.

The council had been considering a plan for housing and sports facilities on the 18-acre field, which has sparked some outrage in the town.

Leader of the county council Steve Count was due to present a motion to hand over the field at the next full council meeting but has withdrawn this.

He is delighted with the result.

Cllr Count said: “I am elated. I finally had the chance to deliver what the people of March wanted.

“There has been a lot of discussion all the way along. Until I heard people talking this morning, I didn’t know if everything had come together. A lot of work has gone into this and it has paid off. It has not always been visible.”

The vote was won by 13 votes with three against and one abstention.
