Poets and writers from across Cambridgeshire took part in the fourth annual Fenland Poet Laureate Awards.
The competition received over 130 entries and the judges were overwhelmed by the quality of the poems submitted.
The top ten finalists in the senior and junior categories were invited to read their poetry at the awards ceremony at the Wisbech and Fenland Museum.
The Young Fenland Poet Laureate prize went to Harriet Munson for ‘Incongruous’. The judges were really impressed by the vivid imagery in Harriet’s poem, which beautifully captured the spirit of the Fens.
Second place went to Alex Florance and Anna Kober took third. The seven highly commended poets in this category were Joe Bunker, Sana Khan, Alice Pealling, Georgina Puttock, Rajveer Sira, Kristina Tunnard and Kenzie Whyatt.
The judges also gave out a special merit prize, for the best non-Fenland poem, which was awarded to Cassandra Silva.
Winner of the adult category was Jonathan Totman with ‘Wicken Fen’.
Joint second were William Alderson and Miriam Brown and David Kerridge took third place.
The six highly commended poets were Josh Bone, Nigel Hilliam, Helen Pletts, Alan Irving, Martin Simmonds and Dominic O’Sullivan.
Upon receiving the award, Jonathan said “I’m over the moon – and still can’t quite believe it!” By taking on the role of Fenland Poet Laureate for 2015,
Jonathan will have a remit to write poetry for local events and raise the profile of literary and creative writing throughout the Fens.
