A group of Fenland women hope to have raised more than £5,000 for a cancer charity by putting their best feet forward.

Mandy’s Moonlight Walkers, a group of 14 Fenland women, completed the 26.2 mile walk around London during the MoonWalk on May 16.

Mandy Welcher, of March, was joined by relatives, friends and colleagues in completing the challenge, which raises money for the Walk the Walk Against Breast Cancer charity.

Mrs Welcher was diagnosed with cancer last year and completed treatment in the summer.

She said: “There was a lovely atmosphere on the night.

“Not everyone on the team knew each other but they were lovely in supporting each other.

“The people who had finished first were there to welcome the others.

“It was a big personal achievement for me. By walking 26.2 miles proves I am getting my strength back.”

Mrs Welcher was treated at Peterborough City Hospital and has praised the team and its facilities.

She said: “They were amazing.”

Thousands of women made their way around London in decorated bras, which followed a movies theme this year. The challenge starts and finishes in Clapham Common.

The team’s costumes were inspired by the Calendar Girls film.

They scratched up times of between six and nine hours.

Another team member is Tina Fountain, of Outwell, who praised volunteers who helped on the night.

She said: “It was an amazing night and very inspiring. Some of the walkers were men.

“It was interesting to walk through London in the dark and see everything lit up.

“The highlight was finishing and having people cheer and clap when you go over the line. The volunteers at the event were really good.”

Members of the team have hoped to raise more than £5,000.

Along with collecting sponsorship, some team members organised coffee mornings, bingos and cake sales along with country and western evenings.
