Wisbech appoint former King’s Lynn record breaker as club’s new manager in United Counties League Premier Division North

Wisbech Town have confirmed the appointment of Alex Street as the club's new manager.

Street - who took charge on an interim basis for three games - replaces Leon Mettam in the dugout at the United Counties League Premier Division North outfit.

His first game in full charge will be at home to Sleaford Town on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

The goalkeeper started his career at the Fenmen as a 17-year-old before enjoying four promotions with King's Lynn Town during a ten-year spell with the Linnets.

Street played 466 games for Lynn and kept 139 clean sheets during his time between the posts - breaking the club's goalkeeping appearance record in the process.

Following his departure from Lynn, Street signed for Bedford Town, where he captained the side to Southern League Division One Central glory.

The 32-year-old returned to Wisbech last season during a brief spell as part of the club's coaching team, alongside Mettam and his assistant Danny Brooks.

Street led the club to two wins during his three games in interim charge and spoke of his desire to take the job on a permanent basis after Saturday's 5-0 drubbing of league leaders Belper United.

"I've come here to do well and help the club but have yet to have a proper sit down with the chairman," he said.

"I've got plans that I want to put into place, but yeah I'm here for the long run. I just want things to be done properly and try to bring a little bit of professionalism to the club.

"We want to kick on and bring that fun factor back and hopefully the attendances will come back. Wisbech is a good club and it has got the support. We just need to get their fans back.

"The players have got to enjoy the wins. I've always said you enjoy the wins because you don't know how many you are getting in a season and if we can get this boat rocking we're going to be a force, but it will take time."

One of Street's first jobs will be to appoint a new number two at Fountain Fresh Park

"I've spoken to someone potentially who can come in and help," he said ahead of the clash against Sleaford.

"He's been in the game and is a good friend of mine. We won't say names yet but he's going to come down Tuesday to have a watch and see what he thinks."

On the prospect of bringing in one or two new faces on the pitch, Street added: It's a hard market at the minute and I've got a couple of people who I think will fit in well.

"We'll be alright and we'll see what happens during the week. I'm confident we'll be okay at this football club and we'll start seeing some good changes happen that will benefit us, on and off the pitch."
