South Holland District Council’s waste chief says to fill in wheelie bin consultation or ‘don’t complain’

Residents are being urged to have their say on whether wheelie bins should be introduced - or told ‘don’t complain’ afterwards.

South Holland District Council has launched a consultation to find out if people in the district - which includes the Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge and surrounding villages - want to keep their black bin bags or move over to wheelie bins and has so far received 2,000 responses.

Mandatory weekly food waste collections are set to be imposed from central Government in 2026, the council is looking into whether it’s time to make the change and end a situation where South Holland is the only authority in Lincolnshire not to have wheelie bins.

But the council’s waste chief, Coun Jack Tyrrell, feels that the response number should be higher and is calling on people to fill in the online consultation form.

Speaking at Thursday’s full council meeting, Coun Tyrrell, who is the portfolio holder of environmental services, said: “We have had more than 2,000 responses in less than 10 days so it is going well.

“I would encourage people to do the consultation as 2,000 is not a lot when you think that we have 45,000 houses.

“I am hoping that we will get more than 10,000 responses - I don’t want people to complain after the fact.

“I would urge everyone to get involved. Don’t complain to me after.”

The consultation runs until Sunday August 25, with the survey available via www.sholland.gov.uk/WasteSurvey.

The council has been promoting the consultation at various market days and other events in the district plus paper copies of the survey are available at the council offices in Priory Road, Spalding.

Sessions will also be held at Long Sutton Market on Friday, August 23.

Council leader Nick Worth has previously said that he isn’t afraid to introduce wheelie bins to the district - but only if there is enough demand from residents.
