Firefighters were forced to break into a Swaffham school to tackle the flames in a corridor during the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, Febraruy 10).
The alarm was raised at 4.40pm after a nearby resident could smell smoke and crews managed to track down the smoke.
The blaze was confined to a corridor and roof space of the science block, which now has holes in its roof and smoke damage.
Crews from Swaffham, Watton and Lynn were called out to tackle the blaze, which was brought under control at 6am.
Station manager Joe Warnes said: “We are really pleased that the fire did not spread to the whole the school. There was a danger it could have done, if it had been a windy night.
“The crews had to find it and break the door down to get into the school and put the fire out.”
Electric cables had melted and were hanging down as a result of the blaze.
Roofing work was being undertaken yesterday at the site.
The school has been closed today as electricity
